JAYSON'S 2005 SPRING VACATION
Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina

The eleven day trip involved a direct flight from Portland, Oregon to Atlanta, Georgia. I got my rental car, spent the night at a hotel near the airport before heading south the next day. I began my journey to Macon (visting the Georgia Music Hall of Fame). Then it was off to Plains (home of former US President Jimmy Carter) and Columbus.

From there, I crossed into Alabama, stopping in Montgomery (the state capital), Birmingham (seeing the Vulcan statue [the Roman god, not the Star Trek character] as well as the cityscape), Decatur, Huntsville, Florence, Muscle Shoals (saw a cousin I have not seen in over 20 years) and Tuscumbia (birthplace of Helen Keller).

I continued westward into Mississippi visiting Tupelo (birthplace of Elvis Presley), Jackson (state capital) and part of the Mississippi Delta region. I made my way across Tennessee stopping in Memphis (home of the blues and Elvis Presley's Graceland Mansion), Nashville (Tennessee's state capital and the world's country music capital), Chattanooga (The Chattanooga Choo Choo) and Knoxville.

I continued eastward into North Carolina visiting Charlotte, the Raleigh-Durham area, and Wilmington (where the World War II battleship USS North Carolina is permanently docked). Then, it was down the Atlantic Coast into South Carolina stopping in Myrtle Beach (ocean views, fun amusement rides and salt water taffy) and Charleston (and its historic downtown).

I returned into Georgia stopping briefly in Savannah before heading back to Atlanta (spending the last night in Macon). I was able to drive through Atlanta, but did not get a chance to visit any of the places due to time restrictions, and I had a plane to catch back home.

The next time I go down there, I intend to visit the CNN center, the World of Coke, the Atlanta Underground, and the Martin Luther King national monument. I also did not get a chance to visit Columbia, South Carolina nor the historic mansions in Charleston, South Carolina, which I hope to do that on a future trip. There is so much to see and do in The South, but you need to take the time to visit everything.
