Using
my own car again, I took a five-day, four night road trip covering just Oregon
and Washington.
I headed south toward the Oregon coast stopping in Lincoln City (shopping
and taffy) and Newport (Nye Beach and the Oregon Coast Aquarium) before spending
the night in Florence. The next day, I cut across into Eugene, Sisters
and Bend.
From there, it was a northbound ride through Redmond, Madras, Dufur, The
Dalles and Biggs before crossing the Columbia River into Washington. I
continued my journey north visting Goldendale (nice little town) and Yakima.
After that, I cut across the Cascades back into western Washington,
spending my last night in Centralia (along with a visit to the outlet mall).
The
last day, I headed toward Mt. St. Helens. Eleven years ago, I viewed
the volcano from Windy Ridge on the east side. This time, I was coming
in from the west to Johnston Ridge. This was the best and closest view
of the mountain I encountered since the eruption in 1980. After a stop
at the gift shop in Castle Rock, I concluded the trip through Longview and
Kelso in Washington and Rainier, St. Helens and Scappoose in Oregon.
